Dear Madam:
I am writing this letter to inform you about an encounter I had with one of your employees. His name is Gabriel and he was working as a valet at Maggiano’s restaurant in Scottsdale, on the evening of December 21, 2005.
About 5:15 PM, I parked my Ferrari in front of the Capital Grill (which essentially shares the parking lot with Maggiano’s). I left a tip with the valet of the Capital Grill and proceeded inside. Shortly thereafter, an employee of the Capital Grill advised me that a valet parking attendant wanted to speak to me. Gabriel met me in the foyer of the restaurant and handed me three $100 bills (that were neatly folded together). He told me that he noticed the money on the ground, after I reached into my pocket to get a tip for the Capital Grill valet (how ironic). His apparent goodwill gesture caused quite a stir with the Capital Grill staff, as many had expected that his request to speak to me was related to a parking incident.
Without hesitation I gave Gabriel $100 of the $300, and kindly thanked him. He humbly smiled and wished me Merry Christmas. I went back to my seat in the restaurant, but I couldn’t help but think about what had just happened. I realized I had to investigate the integrity of Gabriel’s apparent goodwill. I proceeded outside to speak with the Capital Grill valet attendants (which is only about 50 feet from Gabriel’s Maggiano’s valet station), and asked them if they knew about what Gabriel had done. They knew nothing about it.
This not only confirmed Gabriel’s integrity, but his unquestionable honesty. He didn’t bring the money to me because other valet’s knew about it or because he was goaded-on by someone else. He brought me the money because he is a good person. Indeed, how many young men would return $300, a few days before Christmas, to someone who drives a Ferrari?
I wanted to share this with you because true honesty and integrity is often overlooked in the complicated and cynical world we live in. Congratulations to you and your company for having such an outstanding employee and most importantly, please thank Gabriel for his moral leadership. Merry Christmas!
Sincerely,
Lawrence G. Ryckman
